United Township High School social studies teacher Mrs. Heather Monson has been receiving a lot of attention lately as the winner of the annual Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching. This is the first year in the history of the awards that a teacher outside of the Chicago area was presented with the Golden Apple.

“I was very shocked and surprised,” said Mrs. Monson, smiling as she recalled the moment she found out she was a winner.

Mrs. Monson teaches College Prep World History, World History, Senior Level Critical Thinking, and Western Civilization here at UT. She has helped her students get involved in the governmental process, and has helped them attain an estimated $200,000 in scholarships these past five years. She has done work with the National Council for the Social Studies, Illinois State Board of Education, and the Youth Advisory Council.

The Golden Apple Award honors teachers who strive to make a positive impact on their students’ lives as well as in their community. More than 550 high school teachers were nominated for the award, with nominations coming from 71 Illinois counties.

As for her plans moving forward after this reward, she says “I am very excited to study at Northwestern University and to be a part of the Golden Apple Academy.” Mrs. Monson will also work with Golden Apple scholarship winners in the summer.
