Raw Toast: True love transcends bathroom walls

Lucky Kevin has had love for him expressed and immortalized in a girls’ bathroom stall. Our writer dreams of the day she’ll have a young man immortalize her…sort of.

“Raw Toast” is an opinion column from co-editor Haley Davidson, and does not represent the view of the Panther Press staff, adviser, administration, or school district.  In fact, there’s a good chance it doesn’t reflect the view of anyone other than Haley.

How do you know when love is true?

Some people think it’s when they first hear their significant other whisper “I love you,” but others aren’t even sure on their wedding day.  To me, I know true love when I see it, and it is in the form of engravings on bathroom stalls.

When I take a trip to the bathroom, it just warms my heart to see that some anonymous lover scratched “I love Johnny” with some kind of torture device she keeps on her while she was on the toilet.  That mark of love is forever.  No matter how many times the stall is scrubbed, or how many times they paint over it, her token of love for Johnny will forever be seen by the portion of the public that shares that same toilet.

I make a point of asking my male friends if they have ever seen my name written in the bathroom, but unfortunately, they haven’t yet.  I only hope that one day someone loves me enough to be thinking of me while he is sitting in a bathroom stall and will be inspired to scratch my name into the germ-filled walls around him; but for now, it seems as though it’s just a far-away fantasy.
