On Wednesday, April4, over 150 students filled the gymnasium and donated their blood in the Student Council sponsored blood drive, held in conjunction with the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center. The annual event helps increase the local blood supply through the donations of students and teachers here at UTHS.
There were 163 units of blood collected, well above the goal of 135 units. Of those donors, 91 of them were giving blood for the first time. According to Rachel Lorenzen of the MVRBC, this was enough blood to save up to 489 lives.
A can of Mountain Dew, a couple of cookies, and some missed class time are the perceived rewards for the students who shared their blood, but it is really the life-saving properties of their gift that is the important part of this day.
